Search Engine Optimisation SEO

Search engine optimisation, or SEO for short, is a vital part of any website development.  Would you invest in a new shop, get it stocked up, hang the sign above the door then move it all to a desert island where nobody can find you?  Probably not.  That's the high street equivalent of having a website without implementing search engine optimisation.

Over 60% of online purchases are preceded by the use of a search engine.  So if you're not well listed, you're missing out on a load of customers.  At the moment, the search landscape is dominated by Google, followed by Microsoft and Yahoo.  The image above shows Google's search results after searching for the term 'motorbikes'.   If you look closely, the top result, 'Cheap Motorcycle Cover' is a 'Sponsored Link' and the same goes for those down the right hand side of the page.  These clients are paying Google every time somebody clicks on their listing.  For high value products and services, such as mortgages, this can cost as much as £20 per click.  This kind of investment is beyond most businesses, but there is an alternative, search engine optimisation.

The search result directly below 'Cheap Motorcycle Cover' isn't a sponsored link, it appears there having had SEO implemented effectively on the Motorcycle News website.  Motorcycle News don't pay anything to Google when someone clicks on their listing, thereby demonstrating the value of search engine optimisation.  Your website can attract lots of visitors for free, after successfully implementating SEO.  Free advertising?  We like the sound of that.

So, it's worth investing some time and effort into SEO when building a website.  It's a complex technique, determined by Google's algorithm, which in turn determines where your website ranks in their search results.  The owner of Design Transformation used to apply his trade at a London agency which charged £1,000 a day for his SEO services, which goes to show how valuable a commodity it is.  Don't worry, we don't charge anything like that amount.
